A split-screen pricing sheet built for a tablet on a site visit. On the left you enter the quantity takeoff — metres of cable, sockets, switches, fixtures, distribution panels and junction boxes — with the material cost and labour hours for each. You pick how the cable will be routed, and the labour multiplier that environment carries is applied and shown. You switch on any safety risks that apply, such as confined space entry or working live, and each adds a visible labour surcharge. On the right, an itemised receipt updates as you type: materials, markup, labour, the routing uplift, the risk uplift, your margin and tax. One tap produces a proposal PDF. Every rate and multiplier is a starting default you edit — the tool has no price list, and nothing you type ever leaves the device.
How to use Electrical Job Estimator
- Enter the takeoff — Type the quantity for each item. The material cost and labour hours beside it are starting defaults — overwrite them with your own rates, and the per-line cost and hours appear on the right of each row.
- Pick the routing environment — Choose how the cable is laid. Exposed work is the baseline; drywall, concrete chasing and buried runs carry progressively larger labour multipliers, which are shown on each option. You can override the multiplier if your experience differs.
- Switch on the risks that apply — Each HSE toggle adds a labour surcharge and turns red, and a banner shows the combined uplift in both hours and money. Surcharges add together rather than compounding.
- Set your rates and generate — Enter your labour rate, material markup, company margin and tax. Fill in the client, site and reference, then tap Generate proposal document for a PDF you can hand over or email.
Frequently asked questions
Is the total a binding quote?
No, and it is deliberately labelled an estimate. The tool multiplies the rates you give it — it has no price list, no supplier feed and no knowledge of your market, so a wrong cable rate produces a confidently wrong total. Treat the output as a proposal with a validity date, check it before you send it, and price the job yourself. The proposal document says the same on its face.
Where is my pricing stored?
In your own browser, on that device, and nowhere else. There is no account, no server and no sync — which also means there is no access control: anyone who can unlock the tablet can open the tool. Clearing your browser data clears your rates, so keep a copy of anything you cannot rebuild.
How do the risk surcharges combine?
They add. Confined space at 35% plus live working at 25% gives 60% on top of the routed labour hours, not 68.75%. Adding is how a rate card is normally read, and compounding them would quietly inflate the price. The routing multiplier is applied first, then the combined risk surcharge.
Why did my cable rate not change when I switched between metres and feet?
Because the number you typed is a price per unit, and silently rescaling a price is exactly how a quote goes wrong. The unit label changes and the tool tells you it has — check the cable row's material cost and labour hours and adjust them yourself.
Can I use it with no signal?
Yes. It is entirely client-side, so it works offline in the browser and in the downloadable Electrical pack, which is the point on a site with no coverage.
Tips
- Set your labour rate, markup and margin once — they are saved on the device, so the next site visit starts from your numbers.
- The routing multiplier only touches labour, never materials, which is usually how chasing and drywall work actually costs more.
- Work out the load and cable sizes first with the Circuit Load and Wire Size tools, then bring the quantities here.
